We live in a world obsessed with straight lines.

Look around. The interfaces on our phones are grids of pixels lined up in neat rows. Our cities are built from glass-and-concrete boxes.

Charts, reports, presentationseverything obeys a strict geometry. Even artfrom Malevichs Suprematism to digital minimalismlooks for beauty in right angles and clean lines.

Parallel and perpendicular has become another word for beautiful. Logical has become another word for true.

And there is a reason for that.

Mathematics, logic, and computers have given humanity unprecedented power over the world. We have learned to count with a precision our ancestors could scarcely have dreamed of.

We have digitized everything that can be digitized, and now we have answers to every questionprovided the question is properly framed and already entered in our databases.

But there is a paradox.

The more precisely we count, the less we understand.

The more data we have, the harder it becomes to see the whole picture.

The more logical our reasoning, the more often it drives us into a dead end with no exitbecause the exit lies beyond logic.

We get figures precise to the nanodecimalyet still no answer.

Straight lines are beautiful, but nature draws none.

Logic is elegant, but the human mind works differently. We can admire the computer all we like, but it does not think the way we do.

Thank God for that.

There is another way of thinking.

A way older than logic, older than mathematics, older than writing itself. A way people have always usedbut one they stopped noticing because it became as invisible, as natural, as air.

This is analogical thinking.

Not 'either-or,' but 'both are alike.' Not 'therefore,' but 'as if.' Not a straight line of cause and effect, but a web of similarities and correspondences in which everything is connected to everything else.

This way of thinking does not replace logic. It makes logic meaningful.

Because before you can prove anything, you have to understand exactly what it is you are proving. And understanding comes only by relating the unknown to the known.

When we were children, my sister and I fought a lot. I had a whole arsenal of toy weapons; she had only a tiny rag doll and a little needle.

He came crawling on his knees, meek as anything, begging for mercy and surrender!

1.1 The World Before Logic

.

To understand how analogies work, you have to imagine a mind in which they have not yet been set apart from reality.

Modern human beings draw a sharp boundary: between I and the world, thought and thing, symbol and image, object and subject, and a host of other categories.

For Paleolithic humans, that boundarythat opposition, reallydid not yet exist. More precisely, it was so permeable that we would call it intuition. They called it life.

There was no writing, and so no rigid way of pinning concepts down. There was no logic as a formal system, and so thought was shaped not by terms but by whole images.

A neurophysiologist would say the right hemisphere was dominant: the world was perceived as a single, connected, breathing whole. Castaneda would say that the logician was still too much of a child to hold any power.

Human beings did not see themselves as separate from nature. They were part of it. And their relationship with the world was built not on why but on as if.

1.2 The Fundamental Task: Survival

.

Maslows hierarchy of needs in the Paleolithic was starkly simple: food, safety, health, reproduction. Everything else was a luxuryone that arrived much later in history. And even then, not for everyone.

Hunting: get meat. Medicine: dont die of disease. Defense  to fend off predators or a hostile tribe. Reproduction  so the family line would continue.

Every one of these tasks came down to a single problem: the world is unpredictable. The animal may get away, the illness may not recede, the enemy may prove stronger. What was needed was a way to exert influence over the unpredictable.

1.3 The Law of Conservation of Energy in the Primitive Mind

.

We know the law of conservation of energy as a principle of physics. In the primitive mind, it existed as a felt reality, grounded in experience: energy does not vanish; it passes from one form to another. From one place to another. From one form to another. From a living animal to its painted image. From the sick person to their image. From the dying to the newborn.

This was not abstract knowledge. It was perception and personal experiencesomething lived through. The world is a closed system: nothing vanishes; it only changes shape.

And as we now know, the brain of a sentient being possesses a key feature: the so-called mirror neurons. It is precisely their presence that enables an intelligent being to mirror one kind of information or another. In essence, that means becoming analogous to another object or process.

From there, it is only a short step to the central discovery.

1.4 The Law of Similarity

.

If energy flows and the world is one, then like can act upon like.

This is not a logical deduction. It is intuition made method.

If you draw a bison on a cave wall and then pierce it with a spear, even in a virtual, phantom game, you can acquire certain skills and behavioral patterns.

And those skills may prove genuinely useful when the time comes to hunt a real bison. But this game has to be played well  and with inspiration.

Because here, Stanislavsky is life itself. And its verdict  I dont believe it  means failure, with all the consequences that follow, often bleak and even fatal for the actor.

Make a figurine of the sick person and perform acts of healing over it, and the illness will recede.

Put on an animals hide and dance its dance, and you will take on its strength and agility.

To the modern mind, this looks like foolish, theatrical paganism and superstition. Pointless and futile.

For Paleolithic man, it was a technology. Often the only one he had. And those who failed to use every chance open to them sometimes simply died out, like mammoths.

1.5 Shaman as a system operator

.

In any society, individual people vary in their abilities. In any complex undertaking, there are specialists. And the more complex the matter, the fewer the specialists. There were masters of the craft when it came to the technology of total, conscious mirroring as well.

A Shaman is not a sorcerer in the way we use the word.

Perhaps it is someone whose mirror neurons fire a little more often, and a little more effectively. Perhaps more than just a little.

But above all, it is someone who can work withand truly understandslikenesses, analogies, visualizations, identification, disidentification, and a great many other things besides. Not in theory, but in practice. At the level of conscious skill and unconscious reflex.

He knows which image fits which task. He remembers which rituals worked for his ancestors. He sees connections where others see only scattered events.

The shaman was the first master of analogy. His drum is not a musical instrument, but a way of tuning the mind to the right rhythm.

His dance is not entertainment, nor is it foolish clowning for the benefit of his naive, trusting tribesmen. It is a time-tested method, proven across generations, for entering a state in which resemblance becomes reality.

And above all: the shaman works for the tribe. His magic is a collective tool for survival. If the tribe survives, so does he. If he dies, that whole chain of profane imitation is broken once and for all.

The ritual brings people together, synchronizes their intentions, and creates a shared field of meaning. Hunters who have passed through the ritual act with greater coordination and confidence. It is precisely this cohesionthe ability to act as a single living organism rather than a scatter of separate individualsthat both sports coaches and special-forces sergeants try to forge through countless training sessions and field exercises.

And in the hunt, cohesion and confidence matter no less than the sharpness of the spear. Often, they are what decide the outcome.

1.6 Applying the Method

.

Hunting.

In the caves of France and Spain, archaeologists have found images of bison pierced by spears. This is not art in our sense of the word. It is a ritual of preparation. A band of hunters spent the night in a cave, painting the walls, dancing, slipping into trance, rehearsing the patterns of behavior, the division of roles, and the details of the hunt. They were creating that very plan and sequence of action not in words, but through muscle memory and newly formed conditioned reflexes.

By morning, the bison on the wall had been killed. The hunters went out on the real hunt in the kind of state that todays coaches would call programmed for success.

Medicine.

Many cultures have preserved rituals involving the making of a figurine representing the sick person. The figurine was then subjected to actions meant to heal the person it represented. In one form or another, this practice was found almost everywhere. Few people realize it, but even the ancient statues of gods and heroes belong to the same cultic tradition, only in a somewhat altered form.

From a modern point of view: a placebo. But a placebowithout wandering into esoteric or metaphysical thicketsworks, if people believe in it. And faith was, more often than not, if not absolute, then at least widely shared.

Fertility.

Ritual dances that imitate the growth of plants or the mating of animals are a way of setting the process in motion through resemblance. What is at work here is theoften ritualsynchronization of social consciousness with the consciousness of individual members, enabling a transition to a new stage of the cycle. A kind of symbolic ritual throwing of the switch onto a different trajectory of life.

1.7 What Was Really Going On Here

.

A skeptic will say, But that doesnt work. A spear thrust into a drawing doesnt kill a bison.

And he would be right, if by working we mean a direct physical effect. But the method of ritual analogy works differently.

It works through the mind of the hunter, the shaman, and the tribes collective consciousness.

It primes the psyche for success.

It brings the group into sync.

It creates a sense of control in an unpredictable world.

It passes on knowledge through vivid formsstories, dances, drawings.

A person who has gone through the ritual acts differently from one who has not. Which means the method works.

Whats more, a ritual of resemblance creates what might be called a 'ski-track' effect. 

When someone repeats a ritual that someone else has already practiced over and over, they enter the required state more easily.

1.8 Why This Is a Method of Analogy

There is no 'ifthen' logical inference here. There is an act of likening.

The drawing becomes a bison.

The figurine becomes the sick person.

A collective sending becomes the growth of grain.

Here, analogy does not explain the world; it creates the necessary reality in the mind, so that it can later be brought into being in the world.

This is the first and most ancient method of analogy. It was born not out of idle curiosity, but out of the need to survive. And it still works todayin visualization, in ritual, in any sphere where the mind must first be aligned with the right image before action begins.

2.1 From Analogy to Action

.

Magical analogy operated through whole, undivided images. Humans likened the bison to a drawing, and themselves to the bison in a ritual dance. But in tackling practical problems, they discovered something elsesomething simpler and more tangible.

Nature had already solved many of humanitys problems.

All that remained was to adapt those ready-made solutions to human use.

2.2 What Humans Learned from Nature

.

Paleolithic humans lived within nature, not apart from it. Day after day, hour after hour, they watched:

How a sharp fang tears flesh.

Like a claw sinking into hide.

Like a horn piercing a defense.

Like a strong bone bearing weight.

Like a cup-shaped leaf or shell holding water.

Like an animal hide retaining heat.

He did not think, I need to invent a knife. He thought: I need something that does what a fang does. And he took a fang.

2.3 The First Functional Transposition

That is how the first knife came into being. Not a fang, but a stone sharpened into the shape of a fang.

The function migrated from one bearer to another. This is no longer borrowing, but a transfer of function.

The bowl imitates cupped hands, then a shell, then a clay vessel modeled on the shell.

The hammer imitates the fist, then a stone clenched in the fist, then a stone tied to a stick.

The needle imitates a fish bone or a plant thorn.

Every object we hold in our hands today has a natural prototype, first glimpsedoften thousands of years ago.

2.5 Why This Is a Method of Analogy

.

Here analogy operates not at the level of image (this drawing is a bison), but at the level of function (this object works like a fang).

What humans recognized was a similarity not in appearance, but in action. They carried over not the form, but the principle.

This was a huge step in the evolution of thought. From concrete resemblance (a bison as a drawing) to abstraction (sharp as a claw). Abstraction is born from analogies between functions.

2.6 Examples That Have Survived to the Present Day

.

Many solutions borrowed from nature are still in use today almost unchanged.

The medical syringe and needle echo the snakes venom gland and fang.

The saw mirrors the serrated edge of a leaf or an insects jaw.

Velcro was invented in the twentieth century, but its model came from the burdock burr (a direct continuation of the method).

The lever works on the principle of a jointor of a root prying up a stone.

For insulation, wool, down, and feathers are still the bestand often the most desirablematerials.

Even modern designbionicsis really the same method of functional borrowing, only now made conscious and technological.

Reliability. Natures solutions have been tested by millions of years of evolution.

A foundation for further development. From fang to knife, from knife to sword, from sword to the machine.

Understanding Function. Human beings learned to see not only objects, but what they do.

3.1 From Borrowing Form to Borrowing Essence

.

Humankind learned to take ready-made forms from nature: a fang became a knife, a hide became clothing, a shell became a cup. Then it learned to transfer functions: a stone shaped like a claw could cut no worse than the real thing.

But sooner or later, the question had to arise: could one transfer not only form and function, but the beasts very natureits essence itself? Its strength, agility, cunning, its ability to survive?

The answer was yes. Thus was born the method of totemic identification.

3.2 Totemism as Systematic Plagiarism

.

A totem is not just a guardian beast. It is humanitys attempt to appropriate an entire package of natural solutions evolution had worked out long before human beings ever appeared.

The wolf is strong, resilient, lives in a pack, obeys the pack leader, and never abandons its own. A person who identifies with the wolf is trying to become like it. What he copies is not the form itself (putting on a wolf skin is easy enough), but its behavior, hierarchy, psychology, and vital force.

This is no longer just borrowing a tool. It is the borrowing of a way of life, a mode of thought, sometimes even a kind of behavioral code. What today is called the archetype and an egregoric connection.

The totem school was historys first attempt to take from nature a ready-made model of survival and apply it to a human group.

3.3 From the totem to philosophical and military schools

.

The more complex society became, the subtler these borrowings grew.

Animal-based martial arts styles (wushu, kung fu) are a direct outgrowth of the method of analogy. A person does not merely don a tigers skin; he moves like a tiger, strikes like a tiger, waits like a tiger, breathes like a tiger. By imitating its outward form, he learns the animals inner mechanics.

The tiger is supple strength and sudden ferocity.

The monkey is cunning and agility.

The crane is balance and distance.

The snake is fluidity and surprise.

The praying mantis is precision and the grip.

This is not a sport. It is a survival technique grounded in a profound understanding of nature.

Shamanic schools went even further. They borrow from nature not only movements, but states of consciousness as well. The totem dance is a way of entering into resonance with the animals archetype, gaining access to its psychoenergetics. For the shaman, a totem is not a symbol but a channel of connection.

Shintoism (Japan) is a rare example of totemism that survived to become a state religion. Kami are not gods in the Western sense. They are the spirits of places, natural forces, animals, and ancestors. Human beings are not set apart from nature; they belong within it, like a younger relative. Festivals, rituals, templesall of it has survived to this day and coexists beautifully with the most advanced technologies.

Japan is the clearest proof that totemic thinking is not a relic, but a foundation sturdy enough to build skyscrapers on.

3.4 Yakuza Clans and Their Animal Foundations

.

The yakuza are a phenomenon that cannot be understood outside a totemic context.

Many clans are built on an 'animal' foundation, both in their philosophy and in the techniques of their fighting styles. Dragon, tiger, snakethese are not merely symbols on a signboard. They shape fighting techniques and movement, a code of conduct, a hierarchy, a strategy. The clan imagines itself as a pack or a pride. Its internal order follows patterns borrowed from nature: the pack leader, the inner circle, discipline, territory.

And it works. Yakuza clans are among the most durable criminal organizations in the world. Not because they are better armed, but because their internal structure has been honed by millions of years of evolution.

3.5 Special Forces and Animal Styles Today

.

Modern special forces may seem like the pinnacle of technology. But even here, totem thinking has never really gone away.

For example, Thailand's special forces use a school of martial arts built around the elephant archetype. Not because fighters imitate an elephants trunk. The elephant stands for strength, stability, and unstoppable force. Through this image, a fighter enters a state in which those qualities become available for practical use.

GRU, special forces, marinestheir training still includes elements of animal styles (movement, jumps, psychological conditioning).

Martial arts developed for the military generally included a totemic component, even if it was never advertised. It is no accident that the emblems of many intelligence services and security units, as well as heraldic coats of arms, still feature one totemic image or another.

A person who identifies with a predator fights differently. He taps into mechanisms evolution built into us long before the Kalashnikov assault rifle ever appeared.

3.6 Why This Is Not a Relic but a Resource

.

Attempts to stamp out totemismby monotheistic religions, the Enlightenment, and sciencehave failed. Why?

Because the method works.

It gives us access to ready-made patterns of behavior, honed over millions of years. A tiger does not stop to think how to attackit already knows, at the level of the egregore and the subconscious. A person who enters the tiger state does not agonize over decisions like Hamlet, either. He acts intuitively, and more often than not without mistake.

In situations where there is only a split second to thinkcombat, negotiations, dangertotemic, half-conscious thought proves incomparably more effective than the paralysis of logic brought on by fear and surprise.

3.7 The Method of Totem Identification in Its Purest Form

.

Put briefly, the method is this:

Identify in natureor in a particular animala set of qualities a person needs.

Find a way to recreate those qualitiesthrough imitating movement, breathing, image, or ritual.

Identify yourself with the bearer of those qualities until the boundary disappears (Im not like a tigerI am a tiger).

Use the resulting state to solve the problem.

This is not magic in any primitive sense. This is a psychotechnology grounded in the brains ability to absorb the qualities of an observed object through deep identification (mirroring).

4.1 The Law of Rhythm

.

In nature, nothing stands still. Everything moves, breathes, pulses, shifts. Day gives way to night, and night to day. Winter yields to spring, spring to summer. High tide gives way to low tide, and low tide to high. Animals migrate, plants burst into bloom, fruit ripensand all of it right on time.

Hermes Trismegistus, distilling the observations of millennia, formulated this as the law of rhythm: Everything flows out and flows in; everything has its tides and ebbs.

People grasped a simple truth very quickly: trying to pick mushrooms in winter is pointless. Sow too early, and you will ruin the harvest. Hunt animals out of season, and you'll go hungry. Nature does not tolerate whim. It has its own schedule.

There was only one question: how do you discover that schedule?

4.2 First Observations

.

The most obvious rhythms are written in the sky.

The sun rises and sets  that is day and night. The moon waxes, turns full, wanes, and vanishes  that is a month. The sun climbs higher, then sinks lower  that is a year.

For thousands of years, people simply looked up and remembered. Over time, patterns emerged: when a certain star appears, it is time to sow. When the Moon is in a certain phase, it is time to harvest. When the Sun reaches a certain point, it is time to migrate.

That is how astronomy was born.

4.3 Astronomy as a Survival Science of Synchronization

.

Today, astronomy seems like a lofty science of distant worlds. But its roots lie in Maslows pyramid, at the very bottom.

People began watching the stars not out of idle curiosity. They needed to know:

When the snow melts and the hunting begins.

When the rivers spill over and fish grow plentiful.

When roots and berries ripen.

When the birds return.

When it is best to conceive children so they will be born in the warm season.

The sky became a calendar. The mechanism that turns the heavenly bodies turned out to be the very mechanism that governs the harvest, the floods, and the behavior of animals.

Human beings were too weak to argue with nature.

So he aligned his earthly rhythms with the rhythms of the heavens. And it worked.

4.4 Astrology as an Applied Discipline

.

Here a subtle point arises.

If celestial rhythms govern the changing of the seasons, the flooding of rivers, and the behavior of animals, why should they not govern human behavior? After all, human beings are part of nature too.

That is how astrology was born.

Official science still refuses to recognize it. But if we look at astrology not as a way of predicting fate from a newspaper horoscope, but as an attempt to synchronize human psychology and social behavior with cosmic rhythms, the picture changes.

Astrology is a method of analogy built on rhythm and resemblance, in which the heavenly bodies become models for human character, relationships, and events. Is Mars aggressive? Then people with a strong Mars will tend toward aggression. Is Venus harmonious? Then Venusian types will tend toward love and art.

This is not a cause-and-effect relationship in the scientific sense. It is analogy developed into a mature, ordered system.

Does it work? Thats a complicated question. But the fact that astrology has survived for thousands of years and is still sought after suggests that it must, apparently, be solving some real problem.

If we make the right analogy, astrology plays much the same role as a navigator on a long ocean voyage. Of course, you can ignore natural ocean currents and sail blindly, against the prevailing flow.

But a good navigator, skillfully plotting the course with currents and winds in mind, saves time and resources.

Its a fact.

4.5 Feng Shui, Taoism, and Other Systems

.

The same logic is at work in systems that seek to bring people into sync with place and time.

Feng Shui is not just about 'how to position your bed so money will come your way.' It is an attempt to discern the flows of energy (Qi) moving through space and time, and to place a person within them so that they do not hinder those currents, but harness them.

In its practical forms tooalchemy, medicine, qigongTaoism starts from the premise that the human being is part of a cosmic mechanism. A persons health, longevity, and spiritual growth depend on how closely they are attuned to the rhythms of nature and the heavens.

All these systems share one central idea: the world is a vast piece of clockwork, and human beings have two choices:

either force their way through, ignoring its rhythms,

or learn to move in sync with them and tap into the energy that is already there, already flowingyou simply have to catch the current.

4.6 The Method of Synchrony

If we step back and generalize from everything said above, we can discern a single method underlying astronomy, astrology, feng shui, Taoist practices, and many other systems.

This is the method of astrological-calendar analogy, or more broadly, the method of synchronism.

Its essence:

Observe the rhythms of natureespecially the heavensand discern periods, cycles, and recurring patterns.

Map those patterns onto human life: when to sow, when to hunt, which periods favor certain pursuits and which do not.

Bring your actions into sync with those rhythms.

Tap into energy that is already flowing, instead of wasting your strength struggling against the current.

This is not fatalism. It is navigation.

4.7 Why This Works

.

There are two versions.

The first (esoteric): the world really is shot through with common rhythms, and by tuning into them, a person comes into resonance with the cosmos.

The second (pragmatic): any cycle, even one chosen at random, creates structure. Someone who plants by the lunar calendar does so regularly, attentively, and with faith in success. And regular attention and faith are success factors in their own right.

The truth is, most likely, somewhere in the middle. But for the method of analogies, that hardly matters. What matters is that the analogy works: people align their lives with the rhythms of the heavens and gain predictability, confidence, and a sense of connection to the world.

5.1 Analogy on Three Levels

5.2 From Gesture to Sign

Before people drew hieroglyphs, they gestured. A gesture is already a sign, but one still bound to the body. The pointing finger means there. A hand pressed to the chest means mine. A palm covering the eyes means I cant see; a dismissive gesture means no.

Dance is already a system of gestures unfolding in time. Ritual is dance fixed by tradition. And when a ritual must be passed on, fixed in place, ensured so that it does not die with the shaman, it becomes ritual as tradition.

5.3 Two Hemispheres, Two Systems of Writing

This is where things start to get really interesting. The human brain is not uniform.

The right hemisphere governs holistic perception, imagery, space, and the ability to grasp things all at once. It thinks in pictures. A storehouse of information from past lives and incarnations.

The left hemisphere governs sequence, analysis, speech, and detail. It thinks in linked chains. The realm of Castanedas logic.

When a person tries to pin down a thought, they inevitably use whichever tool happens to be dominant at that moment.

In cultures where right-hemisphere, image-based thinking predominates, hieroglyphic writing is born. Each sign is an image compressed to its bare minimum. House is drawn as a little house. Person as a little stick figure. Mountain as three peaks. China, Egypt, the Sumerians in the early stages.

In cultures where left-brain, logical thinking predominates, symbolic writing emerges. A sign does not resemble the thing itself; it stands for it by convention. "A" looks nothing like a bull, though historically it came from the head of a bull (aleph). But over time the image was worn away, and only the function remainedthe recording of a sound. The Phoenicians, the Greeks, the Latin alphabet, Cyrillic.

And conversely.

Symbolic writing trains and develops the left hemisphere and logical thought.

Hieroglyphic writing trains and develops visual thinking and the right hemisphere of the brain.

5.4 Runes  a possible synthesis

.

Runes seem to occupy a curious middle ground. On the one hand, they are lettersthey can be used to write text. On the other hand, each rune has a name and an image that cannot be reduced to mere sound.

Fehu  cattle, wealth. It is not just F; it is a concept.

Ansuz  god, breath, speech. Not just A.

Raidho  path, wheel, order. Not just R.

Runes can be used for writing, but also for divination, incantation, and meditation. They function simultaneously as signs and as images.

Perhaps this is because runes emerged where two traditions met: the Mediterranean one (alphabetic) and the northern one (shamanic, image-based). Or perhaps it is because their creators maintained a balance between the hemispheres that was later lost.

In any case, runes are a hybrid form of writing. And your hypothesis about the syncretic interplay of the hemispheres is perfectly plausible.

And so runic writing may well train both hemispheres to work in sync. Setting off a synergy between them. Something we know, when it appears, as magic.

5.5 From the Sign to the Library

.

When signs grow numerous, they begin to take on a life of their own. Lists, catalogs, and dictionaries emerge. Writing becomes a form of distributed memory.

Now knowledge no longer dies with the elder. It is preserved in clay, stone, and papyrus. Humanity gains direct access to the experience of its ancestors, bypassing oral transmission and all its distortions.

This leap is the direct result of the method of analogy carried to its logical conclusion: if an image can stand in for an object, and a sign for an image, then ultimately the sign comes to stand in for reality itself. And that substituted reality can be manipulated without ever leaving the cave.

The five elements are not elements at all, but phases of matter: wood, fire, earth, metal, water.

The same is true of the Hermetic tradition, of heraldry, and of Tarot. Each symbol is a dense cluster of meaning that no single definition can exhaust. It can only be unfolded, the way a hieroglyph unfolds into a story.

Plato called this the world of ideas. The world of things is nothing but the pale shadows cast by ideal forms. The hieroglyph, the rune, the Tarot trumpeach is an attempt to capture the idea itself: a superposition, a many-sided meaning, a hologram, rather than its shadow.

If you watch the night sky long enough, you begin to notice that it is not standing still. The stars drift slowly from east to west; some rise, while others set. The Sun and the Moon move too, but along their own, more intricate paths. For the people of the ancient world, this motion was no abstraction. Everything depended on it: when the Nile would flood, when the right star would rise for sowing, when the equinox would arrive. The sky functioned like a gigantic clockwork mechanism, only its dial was the whole vault of heaven, and its hands were the Sun, the Moon, and the planets.

The priests had a single task: to learn how to read this mechanism and predict what would come next from the rhythms of the cosmos.

6.2 Why the State Needed It

Today, astronomy seems like a pure, abstract science, far removed from everyday life.

In the ancient world, it was a tool for survival and rule.

Agriculture depended on an accurate calendar: when to sow, when to reap, when to expect the rivers to flood.

Religion and political power were bound up with the cycles of the heavens: the pharaoh was the son of the Sun, the emperor ruled by the Mandate of Heaven. Whoever controlled the calendar controlled the ritual. Whoever controlled the ritual controlled the people.

Navigationthe stars were the guide at sea and in the desert.

Taxes and record-keeping required a single system of time: when to collect taxes, when the year began.

When to begin sowing, when to bring in the harvest, when to drive livestock from summer pastures to winter ones, and so on.

The priests became the first professional astronomers. Their knowledge was secret because it gave them power. And for calculation they needed not only tables, but instruments as well.

6.3 The First Architectural Computers

Long before the Antikythera mechanism, people were already building stone observatories that functioned like analog computers.

The principle is simple: if a structure is precisely aligned with the cardinal directions and the key points where celestial bodies rise and set, it can tell the time on its ownthrough shadow, light, or the position of a star in an opening.

The best-known examples:

Stonehenge, England (c. 30002000 BCE). This ring of massive stones is aligned with the sunrise on the summer solstice. Some researchers believe the complex was used to predict lunar eclipses.

The Pyramids of Giza, Egypt (c. 2560 BCE). The Great Pyramid is aligned with the cardinal directions to within one-twentieth of a degree. The shafts inside the pyramid point toward specific starsfor example, the shaft from the Kings Chamber is aligned with Orions Belt, which was identified with Osiris.

The Temple of Amun-Ra at Karnak, Egypt. The temples axis is aligned with the sunrise on the winter solstice. On that day, a ray of sunlight would pass through the entire temple and illuminate the sanctuary. In ancient times, this moment marked the beginning of the New Year.

Chichen Itza, Mexico (ca. 600900 CE). The Pyramid of Kukulkan was built so that on the equinoxes, the shadow cast by its steps creates the effect of a slithering snake.

Newgrange, Ireland (ca. 3200 BCEolder than the pyramids!). On the winter solstice, a ray of sunlight slips through a narrow opening and lights up the inner chamber for exactly 17 minutes.

The precision of these structures is astonishing. The Pyramids of Giza are aligned with the cardinal directions to within less than 0.1. Stonehenge marks the solstices with an accuracy of a few arcminutes. That would have required decades of observation and a sophisticated grasp of geometry.

6.4 Precession and the Magnetic Pole  A Key to Dating

.

This is where things start to get really interesting.

The Earth is not a perfect sphere, and its axis not only rotates slowly but also wobbles like a spinning top. This phenomenon is called precession. A full cycle through the zodiac takes about 26,000 years. Because of precession, the points of the equinoxes and solstices slowly shift through the zodiac, and Polaris has not always been the North Star.

What is more, the Earth's magnetic poles also drift across the globemore erratically than the geographic poles.

For archaeoastronomy, axial and magnetic precession provide a unique tool. 

If a temple is aligned with the rising of a particular star or with the point of the solstice, modern calculations can determine exactly when that alignment was precise. In other words, the stone itself can tell us when it was set in place.

Examples:

The Temple of Amun-Ra at Karnak. If its axis is aligned with sunrise on the winter solstice, the calculations yield a date of around 20002500 BCwhich matches the archaeological evidence.

Stonehenge. Its alignment with the summer-solstice sunrise points to a date around 2000 BCE (based on the main construction period).

Some Egyptian temples aligned with the star Sothis (Sirius) allow dates to be pinned down to particular years with an accuracy of within a decade.

But there are mysteries too. Some megalithic structures (for example, G?bekli Tepe in Turkey, 10,000 BCE) display alignments that researchers still cannot interpret with certainty.

Apparently, this is tied to the periodic reversal of Earths magnetic poles and, accordingly, to the planets somersaulting, with all the consequences that entails. Known in the Bible as the Great Flood. 

With a cycle that is a multiple of the precessional period of the zodiacal star circle. 

That is, every ~25,776 or ~12,888 years.

6.5 Provocative Questions

.

Once you start doing the math, questions arise that official history has no simple answers for.

Question one: weight and transport.

The Great Pyramid is built of blocks weighing anywhere from 2 to 80 tons. The total weight is about 6 million tons. How were they transported and hoisted into place with millimeter precision, so that the joints between the blocks were no more than 0.5 mm?

Question two: precision of alignment.

The pyramids margin of error in alignment with the cardinal points is less than 0.1. That would require either prolonged astronomical observation or knowledge of geodesya science that, according to the textbooks, would not appear until millennia later.

Question Three: the starry sky.

The shafts in the Pyramid of Khufu are aligned with Orions Belt to the south and Alpha Draconis to the north. But because of precession, those alignments were exact only in a specific era. The calculations point to around 2500 BCwhich corresponds to the time of construction. But who calculated those anglesand how? Why was such precision necessary if the shafts were sealed and never used for observation?

Question Four: knowledge that doesnt fit the historical narrative.

The builders knew the length of the year to within a few minutes. They knew the period of precessiona fact not rediscovered until the 19th century. They knew that the Earth was spherical (Plato was already writing about thisbut who taught the Egyptians?). They knew the mathematics needed to calculate angles to within arcseconds.

You can argue about paleocontact theories, Atlanteans, and aliens. But facts are still facts:

Across the world stand stone observatories built thousands of years ago.

They are aligned with the heavens to a precision that would seem to require advanced mathematics and generations of observation.

They worked like analog computers, enabling priests to determine the year's crucial dates with remarkable accuracy.

They fused religion, power, and economic life into a single system.

Some of them still have not been fully deciphered.

Cosmic projection is a method in which architecture becomes a tool for understanding the sky. Human beings do not merely look up at the stars. 7.1 Numbers That Make Your Head Spin

.

Modern astronomical observations establish the following points:

The astronomical solar yearnot the calendar year, but the actual oneis 365.242199 days.

The astronomical lunar month is 29.530589 days.

Mars takes 686.98 days to orbit the Sun, Jupiter 4,332.59, and Saturn 10,759.22.

Six decimal places is a level of precision that astronomers could achieve only in the 17th and 18th centuries, with the advent of telescopes and accurate clocks. But Babylonian priests already knew the length of the year in the 2nd millennium BCE, with an error of less than a minute. And in the 1st millennium CE, the Maya calculated the synodic period of Venus with an accuracy of 0.01 days.

A simple calendarfor example, 365 days with no leap yearsvery quickly drifts out of sync with reality. Over 100 years, the error adds up to almost a month. That is why every advanced civilization developed its own system of adjustments.

7.2 Calendars Humanity Has Used

.

The Egyptian calendar (from the 28th century BCE)  365 days: 12 months of 30 days each, plus five extra days. The error was about 0.25 days per year. Without correction, it drifted against the seasons by one day every four years, completing a full cycle in 1,460 years (the so-called Sothic cycle).

.

The Babylonian calendar (from the 18th century BCE) was lunisolar: 12 lunar months, with a 13th month added from time to time. Its precision in tracking the sun was achieved through observation. The length of the year was known to within just a few minutes.

.

The Chinese calendar, known since the 14th century BCE, was also lunisolar, with leap months. By the Han era, in the 2nd century BCE, its accuracy was about 365.25 days.

.

The Maya calendar, in its Classic Period (3rd9th centuries CE), was a complex system of several cycles. The haab year had 365 days; the tzolkin, 260. They knew that the true year was slightly longer, and they made adjustments.

.

The Julian calendar (45 BC)  365.25 days, with a leap year every 4 years. With an error of 0.0078 days a year, it had drifted by 10 days by the 16th century, leading to the Gregorian reform.

.

The Gregorian calendar (1582)  365.2425 days, accurate to 0.0003 days a year (one day in 3,300 years). It is still in use today.

.

But the most remarkable example is the calendar created in the 11th century by the poet, mathematician, and astronomer Omar Khayyam.

.

In 1079, by order of the Seljuk sultan Malik-Shah, Khayyam was appointed to head a commission of Isfahans finest astronomers. Their task was to anchor the start of the year, Nowruz, to the spring equinox once and for all.

Khayyam proposed a cycle known as the Jalali calendar, or the Malik-Shah reckoning. Instead of the Julian rule of 1 leap year every 4 years or the Gregorian rule of 97 in 400, he used a ratio of 8 leap years in 33. Its a stroke of calendrical genius: the 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th, 20th, 24th, 28th, and 33rd years of the cycle are leap years.

And now for the raw numbers:

Length of the year according to Khayyam: 365.24242 days.

Actual tropical year: 365.24219 days.

Error: a mere 0.00023 days (about 19.5 seconds)!

That means the error would add up to a single day only after 4,5005,000 years. The Gregorian calendar we use today drifts by a full day every 3,300 years. Khayyams calendar is one and a half times more accurate than the Gregorian one.

And most crushing of all: this calendar is still the official one in Iran and Afghanistan. A thousand years ago, one man created a system for measuring time that we still have not managed to surpass. When you celebrate Nowruz on March 21, you are relying on the invention of a man who wrote rubaiyat about wine and clay jars.

Omar Khayyam went and made a better calendar than the Popehalf a millennium earlier. And while medieval Europe prayed and burned witches, Khayyam already knew the length of the year to within 20 seconds.

.

Every system was a compromise between simplicity and accuracy. But predicting the positions of the planets takes more than simply counting days  it requires constant observation and calculation.

.

7.3 The astrologers tasks that no one wanted to do by hand

.

In ancient times, astrology was not a matter of reading coffee grounds, but a rigorous mathematical discipline. An astrologer had to:

 Calculate the exact positions of the Sun, the Moon, and the five planets at the moment of the clients birth (taking into account their non-uniform motion).

 Determine the rising sign (ascendant)  this requires knowing the exact time of birth and the geographical coordinates.

 Calculate the mutual aspects of the planets (angles of 0, 60, 90, 120, 180) and their placement in the houses of the horoscope.

 Compare this with the planets current positions in order to produce an all-encompassing metaphysical forecast.

To answer a specific questionfor example, about marriage or travelit was sometimes necessary to cast several horoscopes.

Working by hand with tables (ephemerides) and trigonometric formulas took a trained specialist several hours. If the client was an emperor or a grandee, it was hardly proper to keep him waiting until evening. What was needed was a tool that could deliver a result in minutes.

7.4 The Antikythera Mechanismthe first analog computer

.

In 1901, near the Greek island of Antikythera, divers recovered from a sunken ship a shapeless lump of bronze covered in calcareous encrustations. A year later it split open, revealing bronze gears insidea remarkably intricate system of gear trains embedded in petrified wood.

It took half a century to prove that the mechanism dates from around 150100 BC and is an analog computer for astronomical calculations. It contained no fewer than 37 gears, including a differential mechanism (until then, the differential was thought to have been invented only in the 19th century).

Turning the handle on the front panel set disks in motion that showed the positions of the Sun, the Moon, the five planets then known, the phases of the Moon, the dates of the Olympic Games, and eclipse predictions based on the 223-month Saros cycle. The mechanism modeled the Moons uneven motion by means of an elliptical gear systemsomething European science would not manage to replicate until the seventeenth century.

It was a genuine portable calculator. With an instrument like this, a priest or astrologer could obtain in a few turns of the handle data that had once taken hours to work out.

7.5 Higher Astrology  the Horoscope of Place and Interference Waves

.

True astrology was never confined to a simple birth horoscope. Location also mattered: the same sky chart, projected onto different points on Earth, produces different houses and a different ascendant. Hence the idea of a horoscope of place  the natal chart combined with the coordinates of where one lives.

In the Hermetic tradition, there was also the concept of interference waves: the interplay between the rhythms of birth and the rhythms of place creates a unique pattern, like the interference of waves on water. Hence the maxim, attributed now to Cicero, now to Arab astrologers, now to Hermes himself: Every person has a city on earth where they can be happy. To find such a city is to come into resonance with your own star chart.

Working this out required not only knowing the positions of the planets, but also being able to recalculate the house coordinates for any location at speed. Without a mechanical aid, the task was virtually impossible to solve in real time.

7.6 Underestimating the Ancients

When scientists first reconstructed the Antikythera mechanism, they were stunned. Nothing comparable was created in Europe until the 14th and 15th centuries, with the advent of the first astronomical clocks. Medieval science never attained that level of mechanics and mathematics.

The achievements of Hellenistic science (3rd1st centuries BC) proved superior to anything seen in the first thousand years of the Christian era. It took the Renaissance to rediscover what the ancient Greeks had already known.

The conclusion is hard to escape: modern civilization stands on the ruins of the one before it. We are used to thinking of progress as a steady upward climb, but history is full of collapses. The Antikythera mechanism is not the exception, but the rule. It shows that the brilliance of Hellenism was followed by centuries of oblivion.

And if we take pride in our computers today, it is worth remembering that the first computers were analog, made of bronze, and turned by hand. And they did what modern digital machines do in nanosecondsyet in those days it was nothing short of a miracle.

A precision no one has been able to reproduce

The point is not merely that the Greeks could cut bronze with extraordinary precision.

It is that they knew which numbers to cut.

Behind every gear tooth in the Antikythera mechanism stands a mathematical model of the cosmos, encoded in the tooth counts. Researchers have decoded these numbers: 19 (the Metonic cycle), 235 (lunar months in a 19-year cycle), 223 (the Saros, an eclipse cycle), 127 (half the number of sidereal months), 365 (days in the Egyptian calendar).

Each of these numbers is no accident, but a coefficient in a system of equations describing the motion of the heavenly bodies. They made it possible to convert solar years into lunar months, predict eclipses to the very day, and synchronize the calendar with astronomical cycles. A dedicated study showed that the mechanism modeled changes in the Moon's angular velocity with an error of less than 0.5%. That is more accurate than Hipparchus's version of the theory as presented by Ptolemy (2nd century CE).

Researchers emphasize that the mechanism encodes cycles of 462 years for Venus and 442 years for Saturn. Classical Babylonian astronomy tells us nothing about how the Greeks managed to determine these highly precise cycles.

Why Europe Failed to Create an Equivalent

In the Christian era, no such mechanism was created, because the system of equations on which it depended had vanished; without it, the whole device is nothing more than a beautiful toy.
