Chapter 1

Jonathan's Journey

On 3 May I left London. I worked for a company, and my job was to help people buy and sell houses. My employer gave me an important document for Count Dracula. He wanted to buy a house in England, and I agreed to visit him. I packed my suitcase, took my luggage, and started my long journey abroad.

The station was busy because many passengers wanted to travel that day. They stood on the platform and waited for the train. There was a long delay, and we waited for almost an hour. Nobody knew the reason. At last the train arrived, and we left London.

The train stopped in many towns before it reached Hungary. New passengers got on the train, and other passengers got off. I heard different languages around me, but I could not understand them. Everything around me became more and more different from England.

The station was busy

For two days the train travelled through a foreign region. I looked through the window most of the time. The countryside was beautiful. There was a wide valley, green fields, and high mountains. I followed our route on my map because I did not want to lose the direction.

I opened my folder and read the documents again. There was important information about the house in England. I checked every document carefully because I wanted to do my work well. Then, late in the evening, I reached Bistritz in Transylvania. I had a reservation at a small hotel.

The receptionist welcomed me kindly and showed me my accommodation. Then she gave me a message from Count Dracula. It was an invitation to his castle. There was a warm meal on the table, and I was very hungry after my journey. Then I opened the Count's message and read it carefully.

The receptionist looked at me with a worried expression. She wanted to give me some advice before I left. First she tried to explain why the local people were afraid. Then she began to describe old stories about the mountains. Many people believed these stories, but I did not.

The Count's Invitation

Soon an old man came to my table. We had a short conversation together. He asked me to promise that I would wear a small cross during my journey. At first I wanted to refuse because I did not understand him. However, I decided to accept his gift because he looked honest and serious.

That night I did not sleep well. I felt nervous, worried, and a little frightened. There was something strange in the atmosphere of the town. The streets became silent after sunset. Perhaps the people knew something that I did not know.

The next morning I walked around Bistritz before I left. There were small houses with wooden doors and bright flowers. I saw children playing in the streets. Everybody looked at me because I was a foreign visitor. Some people smiled, but others looked away.

In the evening I continued my journey. The coach travelled through forests and mountains. Small villages slowly disappeared behind us, and new forests appeared in front of us. The road became narrow, and there were fewer and fewer people.

The horses seemed nervous and tired on the mountain road. Sometimes the coach moved slowly because the road was steep. Nobody inside the coach spoke very much. We listened to the sound of the horses and the wheels.

At last the coach reached the Borgo Pass. There was nobody there except the travellers. They looked around carefully and spoke very quietly. One woman pointed into the forest. I saw a dark shadow, but I could not see what made the movement.

The travellers looked afraid. One man whispered that there was great danger in these mountains. He said that strange creatures sometimes walked there at night. They probably believed every word they said. I began to think about my own situation.

Then, suddenly, another carriage appeared. It came out of the darkness without any sound. The driver wore black clothes and did not speak. He took my luggage immediately and remained completely quiet.

All the other travellers became afraid when they saw the black carriage, but I picked up my luggage and walked towards it. The horses soon ran very fast through the mountains. I could only see the road for a short distance because the forest became darker every minute. I saw another shadow, but it quickly disappeared.

Chapter 2

Count Dracula

The next evening we reached the castle. It stood high on the rocks, with a thick wall around it and a heavy gate. Everything was dark and quiet. I was looking around, but I could not see anything in the windows. The driver put my luggage on the ground. Then he got into the coach again and disappeared into the night.

For a short time I was standing alone in the courtyard. The air was cold, and the castle looked old and silent. I did not know what to do. While I was standing there, I heard slow footsteps behind the gate. A key turned in the lock, and the heavy door opened.

A tall old man stood in the entrance. He wore black clothes. His face was pale, and his white hair fell to his shoulders. He smiled politely.

“Welcome to my house,” he said. “Enter freely and of your own will.”

Dracula's сastle

His English was very good, but I noticed a strange accent. He took my hand. His handshake was very strong. His palm was as cold as ice, and his long fingers held my hand very firmly. While I was looking at him with surprise, he smiled again.

“I am Count Dracula,” he said. “Welcome to my castle.”

I thanked him for his kindness. I wanted to carry my luggage inside, but the Count stopped me.

“No,” he said. “You are my guest. Let me help you.”

“Welcome to my castle.”

Before I could answer, he lifted my heavy suitcase as if it were very light. I followed him through the hall. The castle was very large. There were long corridors, high ceilings, and old wooden doors. Only a few candles gave light. The walls were covered with shadows, and everything was very quiet.
