Эдгар Аллан По - писатель, поэт-романтик. Один из самых выдающихся американских писателей XIX века. Родился 19 января 1809 года в Бостоне, в семье странствующих актеров. Однако Эдгар Аллан По потомок древнего ирландского рода. Его отец Давид По, сын генерала Давида По женился на молодой талантливой актрисе Элизабет Арнольд и покинул дом. Родители Давида По отреклись от него и примерились только после рождения первого ребенка, Вильяма. Когда Эдгару было всего два года, его родители почти одновременно умерли от чахотки, оставив троих детей. Эдгара разлучили с братом и сестрой - его усыновила семья табачного торговца Джона Аллана. Эдгар Аллан По учился в Виргинском университете, но из-за скупости отчима и карточных долгов вынужден был оставить университет, а впоследствии и военную академию. Как поэт дебютировал сборником "Тамерлан и другие стихотворения" (1827).
