Джеймс Фенимор Купер

Джеймс Фенимор Купер (англ. James Fenimore Cooper; 15 сентября 1789, Бёрлингтон, штат Нью-Джерси — 14 сентября 1851, Куперстаун) — знаменитый американский романист. Вскоре после его рождения отец его, довольно богатый землевладелец, переселился в штат Нью-Йорк и основал там посёлок Куперстаун (Cooperstown), превратившийся в городок. Получив первоначальное образование в местной школе, Купер отправился в алабамский университет, но, не окончив курса, поступил в морскую службу (1806—1811); был назначен состоять при постройке военного судна на озере Онтарио. Этому обстоятельству мы обязаны великолепным описанием Онтарио, встречающемся в его знаменитом романе «Следопыт, или Озеро-море» («The Pathfinder»). В 1811 г. женился на француженке Делане, происходившей из семьи, симпатизировавшей Англии в эпоху войны за независимость; её влиянием объясняются те сравнительно мягкие отзывы об англичанах и английском правительстве, которые встречаются в ранних романах Купера.
