On the flags of which countries can you see symbols that refer to philosophy? In Asian tradition, the white color of the flag symbolizes purity and peacefulness. In the center of the flag is a circle consisting of equal parts – a symbol of the Great Principles of Yin and Yang (yin corresponds to the element of blue, and yang to red). Which countries do locals call by a different name than foreigners? In Korean, the Republic of Korea is called Taehanminguk (Hanguk) or Taehan. Sometimes it is also called Namhan (남한), which means “South Han,” as opposed to Pukhan (북한, North Han), or North Korea. The word Han refers to the ancient tribal unions of Samhan, located on the Korean peninsula. The word “Korea” comes from the name of the state of Goryeo, which existed on the peninsula from 918 to 1392 AD.
