**Натаниель Готорн: жизнь и творчество американского писателя** Натаниель Готорн — выдающийся представитель тёмного романтизма и один из тех, кто внёс значительный вклад в развитие жанра новеллы в американской литературе. **Ранние годы** Готорн родился 4 июля 1804 года в Салеме, штат Массачусетс. Он был единственным сыном капитана Натаниэля Готорна и Элизабет Кларк Мэннинг Хаторн. После смерти отца в 1808 году Натаниель рос в окружении женщин — сестёр, матери и её родственников. С детства он был замкнутым и нелюдимым. Его лучшими друзьями стали книги Шекспира, Спенсера, Буньяна и романистов XVIII века.
