As deacon, John’s duties extended beyond the liturgical functions of the altar. He became a preacher and teacher, addressing the spiritual and moral needs of the people. His sermons began to attract attention for their clarity, fervor, and unyielding commitment to the truth. His words were not mere rhetoric but living fire, kindling the hearts of his listeners and calling them to repentance and faith.
During his diaconate, John composed a number of works that reveal his theological depth and pastoral concern. His writings addressed not only the doctrine of the faith but also practical issues of Christian living. He spoke against the vices of the age—greed, pride, and licentiousness—urging his hearers to pursue virtue and charity.
John’s eloquence was both a gift and a responsibility. He used it to defend the Church against the attacks of pagans and heretics alike, to instruct the faithful in the mysteries of the faith, and to challenge the powerful when they neglected justice or oppressed the poor. His voice was a clarion call to holiness and social righteousness.
The diaconate was also a time of deepening humility and asceticism for John. Though his fame grew, he maintained a life of prayer and fasting, often withdrawing to quiet places to seek the guidance of God. He lived simply and generously, giving much of his own resources to the needy and caring for the sick and the poor.
In the liturgical services of Antioch, John’s role as deacon was vital. He assisted the bishop in the administration of the sacraments and in the governance of the Church. His knowledge of Scripture and his ability to explain its mysteries made him an invaluable servant of the altar.
John’s ministry during these years revealed the synthesis of intellect and holiness, learning and love, that would define his episcopal career. His diaconate was a time of preparation, during which he honed the skills and virtues needed to shepherd the flock entrusted to him.
Though still young, John Chrysostom was already recognized as a man of God, a spiritual father and teacher whose life bore witness to the transforming power of grace. His presence in Antioch stirred many to a renewed fervor for Christ, and his works from this period continue to inspire generations.
Thus, the years of his diaconate were marked by zeal for the faith, dedication to the Church, and unwavering commitment to the salvation of souls. John stood as a beacon of light in a city beset by darkness, a servant ready to follow wherever the Lord would lead.
Chapter VII: Ordination to the Priesthood by Flavian—Inaugural Discourse in the Cathedral—Homilies Against the Arians—Animadversions on the Chariot Races. A.D. 386
In the year 386, the faithful of Antioch witnessed a moment of great solemnity and joy: John Chrysostom was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Flavian, a man known for his wisdom and piety. This ordination marked the culmination of years of spiritual preparation and humble service, opening before John a new path of responsibility and influence within the Church. The mantle of priesthood, heavy with divine authority, was now placed upon his shoulders, and he accepted it not with pride but with deep humility and a resolute heart.
