At the very same hour, while Vixie remained still in the strange aftermath of what she could no longer name clearly as either confusion or discovery, Varvara Morozova lay immersed in the slow warmth of a deep porcelain bath, letting the water hold her in a weightless suspension between thought and sensation.

Steam softened the edges of the room. Light from the shaded lamps broke gently across the surface of the water, turning every small movement of her skin into something almost abstract — no longer quite body, not yet idea.

She did not rush to reconstruct the day. Instead, she allowed it to return to her in fragments, the way things often did when there was no longer any urgency to interpret them correctly.

The morning at the mirror. Dmitri standing obediently in his new clothing. Yelena’s voice — calm, precise, always slightly ahead of the question it answered.

And beneath all of it, like a deeper current she could not yet separate into language, the quiet recognition that something in her understanding of ownership, attention, and presence had already begun to shift — not dramatically, but irreversibly, in small adjustments of emphasis she could feel but not yet fully articulate.

Under the surface, her hand moved almost without intention, drawn by a quiet instinct rather than any formed thought — as though the body itself was continuing a conversation the mind had not yet learned to follow. The water softened everything it touched, dissolving edges, turning sensation into something diffuse and slow.

Submerged, her fingertips sought the tender flesh between her legs, playing softly with the delicate lips there. The water carried each sensation, making the gentle caresses feel both distant and intensely present at once.

For a brief moment, she did not distinguish between curiosity and memory, between what had been done and what was merely being understood.

For now, it was enough that the day had happened. And that she had been awake for all of it.

The memory returned to her first not as image, but as motion.

The carriage.

That slow, upholstered rhythm of travel which belonged only to wealthy households — not the violent shaking of provincial carts nor the practical haste of commercial transport, but the measured rolling comfort of people for whom roads existed chiefly to connect one domain of ownership to another.

Varvara remembered the faint sway beneath her body long before she recalled the landscape itself.

She had been seated beside Yelena upon the deep wine-colored cushions of the closed carriage, one gloved hand resting idly near the window strap while morning light drifted intermittently through the thin veil curtains, softening the world outside into pale bands of gold, dust, and distant green.

The city had receded gradually behind them.

First the broad merchant avenues of Chernograd, crowded with polished carriages, government riders, and dark shopfronts beneath painted signs. Then the outer districts, where manufactories rose in long brick silhouettes above the river haze and groups of laborers moved through the streets in rough clothing already dulled by soot and damp. Beyond that, the land opened slowly into provincial breadth — long fields silvered beneath the late spring light, scattered birch groves, remote chapels standing solitary beside the road like forgotten promises.

Inside the carriage, however, another climate prevailed entirely: warmth held softly beneath the padded walls, mingling with the restrained perfume of expensive cosmetics, the faint animal richness of polished leather, and the quiet rustle of costly fabric moving against costly fabric with every measured sway of the journey.

Yelena sat opposite Dmitri with the composed elegance of a woman who never truly relaxed and therefore never appeared tense. Her traveling attire, though simpler than what she wore in the salons of the city, possessed that same restrained refinement Varvara had always associated with her: dark blue wool fitted precisely through the waist, pale gloves immaculate despite the road, a narrow hat adorned not extravagantly but correctly, as though every ribbon upon it understood its proper social rank.

She held herself beautifully even in stillness.

Not girlishly beautiful. Not softly beautiful.

Constructed.

Varvara had begun noticing that more often lately.

There were women whose attractiveness seemed to belong to nature — careless, immediate, almost accidental. Yelena’s beauty belonged instead to discipline: to years of observation, adaptation, correction, concealment. Nothing in her appeared spontaneous except the things she wished others to mistake for spontaneity.

And perhaps because of that, men trusted her too easily.

Varvara had caught herself thinking this while watching the movement of Yelena’s hands as she removed one glove finger by finger, exposing the elegant narrowness of her wrist.

“You are quiet this morning,” Yelena had remarked at last, her tone mild enough to suggest curiosity rather than scrutiny.

Varvara turned her gaze toward the window again before answering.

“I am thinking.”

“That can become dangerous if overused.”

The faintest smile touched Varvara’s mouth.

“You say that because you prefer people predictable.”

“I say it because most people mistake thinking for understanding.”

Dmitri remained seated across from them, slightly lower, upon the folding servant’s bench fixed near the opposite wall of the carriage compartment. Even in travel, the distinction of position persisted automatically, so naturally embedded within the habits of the household that nobody needed to enforce it aloud.

His knees were apart only enough to balance against the movement of the road. Hands resting flat upon his thighs. Back straight despite the confined space.

The new servant uniform altered him.

Varvara had understood that already at breakfast, yet within the enclosed intimacy of the carriage the transformation became stranger still.

The rough dark shirt fitted closely across his shoulders and chest whenever the carriage shifted, outlining the heavy architecture beneath the cloth — the strength of a man built not for decoration but labor, restraint, endurance. The fitted trousers, with their discreet functional tailoring and concealed fastenings, no longer resembled ordinary clothing at all once one understood their purpose. They were not garments in the social sense. They were instruments of access and management.

Ownership translated into fabric.

And because she had already touched those hidden closures with her own hands only hours earlier, Varvara now found herself unable to look at the clothing innocently.

She became aware, with a faint inward heat she carefully concealed, that she knew how quickly he could be exposed inside them.

Not metaphorically.

Physically.

The thought arrived with such quiet clarity that she lowered her eyes almost at once, pretending interest in the silver clasp of her traveling reticule.

Outside, the wheels struck briefly over rougher stones before settling again into smoother motion.

Yelena observed her for a moment with that calm attentiveness which never entirely ceased, though one often forgot it was there.

“You are nervous”, she said gently.

“I am not.”

“No”, Yelena replied after a pause. “Not frightened nervous. Curious nervous.”

Varvara glanced up.

“And there is a difference?”

“For women, an enormous one.”

Silence settled again, though not uncomfortable silence. The sort belonging to people sufficiently accustomed to privilege that conversation never needed to labor constantly in order to justify itself.

At length Varvara spoke again.

“Will it truly be as large as you described?”

“The estate?” Yelena asked.

“The men.”

Something unreadable flickered briefly through Yelena’s expression then — amusement perhaps, though softened by thoughtfulness.

“In some cases”, she answered, “larger.”

Dmitri did not move.

Yet Varvara became suddenly conscious of his stillness with renewed intensity, as though the word itself had altered the air within the carriage.

Men — not as abstractions, nor as polished figures crossing ballroom floors beneath crystal chandeliers, not as officers bending elegantly over gloved hands during winter receptions, but as bodies: strength measured materially, purchased materially, controlled materially.

She remembered, even now in the warmth of the bath, the peculiar sensation that accompanied this thought — not shock precisely, nor shame, but the first distant awareness that beneath the polished surface of society there existed entire systems of management she had previously observed only decoratively, without understanding their physical reality.

Yelena folded her gloves carefully upon her lap.

“You must not imagine the farm theatrically”, she said after some time. “It is not a circus for bored ladies, whatever certain provincial women pretend. The best houses do not purchase blindly. Men of that size and condition require training before they can enter civil households safely.”

The word safely lingered.

Varvara looked instinctively toward Dmitri again.

His gaze remained lowered exactly as propriety required.

Yet for the first time since she had known him, she found herself wondering not how obedient he was now, but what obedience had once been forced to overcome inside him.

The carriage had been moving for some time now through a quieter stretch of road, where the land began to lose its cultivated certainty and acquire a more open, almost indifferent breadth. Villages appeared less frequently, and when they did, they seemed to belong more to memory than to present life — pale clusters of timber and stone receding quickly behind hedgerows and long, wind-leaning fields.

Varvara had ceased to look at the passing countryside in any meaningful way. Her gaze, though directed outward, no longer registered detail; it had taken on that softened inward focus which often followed sustained thought, as though the eyes themselves had grown slightly detached from their function.

It was Yelena who broke the silence again.

“You are arranging the farm in your mind”, she said, not as a question.

Varvara did not deny it.

“I want to understand it properly”, she replied. “Before we arrive.”

A faint approving stillness settled over Yelena’s expression, the kind that suggested neither surprise nor encouragement, but recognition of something appropriately developing along expected lines.

“That is sensible,” she said. “Imagination is only useful when it is corrected in advance.”

Varvara shifted slightly on the cushions.

“You said the estate is not privately owned in the usual sense. But there is still a household. A structure.”

“There is always a structure,” Yelena answered calmly. “Even when people pretend otherwise.”

“And the owner?”

Yelena allowed a brief pause, as if deciding how much of the answer belonged to description and how much to instruction.

“Count Mikhail Orlov,” she said at last. “A man of military origin, though no longer in service. He acquired the estate after his return from the southern campaigns. He is not… theatrical. That is important to understand.”

Varvara’s attention sharpened slightly at the absence of ornament in Yelena’s tone.

“And the wife?”

A slight pause in Yelena’s attention, as though she briefly weighed the shape of the question.

“Natalia Orlova”, she said at last, gently. “You will most likely be dealing with her directly.”

Varvara let the name settle.

“And what is she like?”

Yelena looked out of the window for a moment, as if aligning memory with language.

“She is competent,” she said. “Which is rarer than people think. She understands the estate as a working system, not as decoration. She manages inspections, demonstrations, acquisitions. In many respects, she is the practical face of the place.”

Varvara absorbed this quietly.

“And she shows them,” she said after a pause.

“Yes.”

The answer came without hesitation.

“As a matter of routine. Not sentiment, not cruelty. Simply procedure. She is very precise about presentation. You will notice that immediately.”

The carriage dipped slightly over uneven ground, and for a brief moment the suspension deepened the silence between them, making it feel more enclosed, more private, as though the world outside had become secondary to what was being constructed inside this small traveling room.

Varvara lowered her eyes again, but not in avoidance — rather in concentration.

“Are they trained already when they arrive?” she asked.

“Some are,” Yelena replied. “Others are not. That is part of what you will see. The distinction between what is raw and what has been made usable.”

She said it without emphasis, as one might describe textiles, or livestock, or any other category of managed property.

Varvara did not respond immediately.

Instead, she found herself thinking not of the farm itself, but of the quiet certainty in Yelena’s voice when she spoke about it — the absence of moral hesitation, the absence of explanation. As if the entire structure had already been agreed upon long before either of them had entered the carriage, and their journey now was merely a movement through something already settled.

Yelena allowed that last silence to remain for a while, as though it belonged to the question rather than the answer.

The carriage moved on steadily, its rhythm unchanged, indifferent to the subtle intensification of thought within its enclosed space. Outside, the land opened further now, hedgerows thinning, fields widening into long, uninterrupted stretches that seemed to belong less to any particular owner than to the idea of ownership itself.

Varvara remained still, her gaze lowered yet unfocused, though now it rested absently upon Dmitri, as if he had become less a person in her perception than a quiet, stable point within the carriage itself, something present without demanding interpretation.

The distinction Yelena had drawn lingered with uncomfortable clarity: raw, and usable. Not as moral categories, not even as aesthetic ones, but as stages within a managed process. Something in the phrasing resisted sentimental interpretation. It was too precise for that.

At last she spoke again, her voice quieter than before.

“And after the visit?” she asked. “When one has… chosen?”

Yelena did not turn immediately. Her attention remained on the road ahead, where the light was beginning to shift, growing slightly harsher as the open countryside reflected more sky.

“That depends entirely on what you choose,” she said.

Varvara’s fingers tightened faintly once within her lap, then relaxed.

“I mean practically,” she clarified. “What happens afterwards. Not the idea of it.”

A slight pause followed — not hesitation, but alignment, as though Yelena were adjusting the level of detail to match the direction of the question.

“Practically”, she said at last, “there are only a few coherent paths.”

Varvara did not interrupt.

“If you go merely to observe”, Yelena continued, “then nothing changes. You return to Chernograd with an impression, perhaps a stronger one than you expect, and life continues as before. That is the simplest outcome.” A faint trace of irony touched her voice then, almost imperceptible, as though she were speaking of something mildly tedious rather than provocative. “Some women even prefer it that way — a brief excursion, a few carefully arranged impressions of obedient, well-trained naked men displayed for inspection, and then back to the comfort of not having to decide anything at all.”

“And if I do not go merely to observe?”

The question was calm, but it had shifted the weight of the conversation slightly forward.

Yelena finally turned her head towards Varvara.

“Then you must decide whether what you acquire remains at Orlov’s estate under their full maintenance, or whether it becomes part of your own household.”

Varvara’s gaze sharpened slightly.

“And that difference is only logistical?”

Yelena’s expression softened almost imperceptibly — not into warmth, but into precision.

“No,” she said. “It is structural.”

She let the word hang for a moment before continuing.

“If it remains there, you gain access without responsibility for continuity. Training, discipline, correction — all of that remains embedded within their system. You are, in that case, a user of a finished infrastructure.”

“And if I take it?”

“Then the infrastructure becomes your responsibility.”

The carriage shifted gently over a rut in the road, and the sound of the wheels deepened for a moment before smoothing again.

“You would need people to maintain it,” Yelena added. “Or you would need to learn how. Either way, it ceases to be external.”

Varvara absorbed this slowly, her attention no longer on the passing landscape but on the internal shape of the options being laid out before her — not as moral choices, but as forms of organization.

“And most people,” Yelena said after a pause, “prefer not to think beyond the first step. They are drawn to selection, but not to consequence.”

Varvara gave a faint, almost absent nod.

Outside, the road continued forward without interruption, as if it had long since decided the direction for them both.

The road began to change before the estate itself revealed its full presence.

It was not a sudden transformation, but a gradual alteration in quality — as though the land, having been loosely arranged up to this point, now began to tighten into intention. The hedgerows grew more disciplined. The fields, still broad and open, bore the faint marks of careful division, their boundaries clearer, their purpose less ambiguous. Even the air seemed to acquire a slightly different density, carrying the subdued scent of cut grass, distant woodsmoke, and something more metallic — the smell of work organised into permanence.

Varvara noticed it without immediately naming it.

Only the rhythm of the carriage betrayed that they were nearing a destination: the horses’ pace becoming more measured, the wheels less hurried over the packed earth, as though even the road itself had begun to anticipate arrival.

Yelena allowed the conversation to fall silent, as if it had reached its proper conclusion.

“We are close now”, she said simply.

Varvara did not respond. Her attention, still outward, rested once more on Dmitri — not with curiosity, not even with recognition, but with a kind of absent steadiness, as if his presence had become part of the carriage’s internal architecture. He remained as he had been throughout the journey: composed, contained, correctly positioned within the unspoken geometry of service.

Beyond the glass, the landscape opened into a broader estate road, framed now by rows of trees that no longer appeared incidental but arranged — intentionally spaced, maintained, and aligned in a manner that suggested supervision rather than nature. Far ahead, the faint outline of buildings emerged: low, extended structures of pale stone and timber, their forms neither ornamental nor austere, but functional in a way that resisted decoration entirely.

Varvara’s gaze narrowed slightly as she tried to understand what she was seeing before it fully resolved.

It did not yet feel like a place of arrival. More like a place that had been waiting.

But the estate did not wait for them.

It had no need to.

Varvara understood this first not as a thought, but as a gradual correction of expectation, as the carriage continued along the final approach road and nothing resembling ceremonial anticipation appeared ahead of them. There were no gates opening in formal greeting, no visible attendants assembled in preparation, no sense that their arrival marked an event in the ordinary sense of the word.

And yet the place was not indifferent.

It was prepared.

That distinction revealed itself slowly — in the way movement began to appear at the edges of vision long before the carriage reached the courtyard proper. A figure briefly visible between buildings. Another at a distance near the stable yard. A shift of presence, not hurried, but already aligned. As though the estate had noticed them not when they arrived, but when they first became inevitable upon the road.

“They have seen us”, Yelena said quietly.

Varvara did not look away from the window.

“Of course they have”, she replied.

There was no surprise in her voice now, only confirmation of something that had already begun to form inside her earlier understanding of such places: that visibility here was not a reaction, but a function.

The carriage turned through the final bend in the avenue of trees and the estate opened fully before them.

It was larger than Varvara had anticipated — not in grandeur, but in distribution. Buildings arranged with practical coherence rather than display: long structures of pale stone and timber, courtyards laid out for movement rather than admiration, enclosed yards where the ground bore the disciplined marks of repeated use. Everything suggested continuity rather than occasion.

And at the centre of it, the courtyard itself.

Spacious, orderly, unadorned.

A place designed not to impress arrival, but to receive it without disturbance.

The carriage slowed.

Varvara felt it before she saw it — the subtle shift in the body of the vehicle as it left the road and entered controlled ground. The horses adjusted their gait, the wheels softened their sound against more compacted earth.

No one hurried to meet them.

And yet, as they crossed the threshold of the courtyard, the sense of attention became unmistakable.

A door opened within one of the main buildings.

A figure stepped out.

Not rushing. Not performing urgency. Simply arriving into position.

Yelena observed her for a moment before speaking.

“Madame Orlova,” she said quietly. “Or one of her people.”

Varvara continued to look out through the window for a few seconds longer, taking in the woman’s measured movement, the unhurried certainty of her presence within the courtyard. There was nothing theatrical in it — no greeting, no visible acknowledgment of the carriage — only the calm assumption that everything approaching would, in time, fall under correct procedure.

Then Varvara turned her head slightly.

Not away from the window in loss of interest, but away from direct observation in order to reframe what she was seeing through Yelena’s understanding.
