“Yes,” replied Mazarin, “but the coadjutor is not yet a cardinal.” –
- Not yet, Monsignor, but he will be.
Mazarin winced, as if to say: “Well, he doesn’t have a hat yet.” Then he added: Потом добавил:
- So, you are sure, my friend, that Monsieur de Beaufort will escape? –
“I am so sure, Monseigneur,” the soldier replied, “that if Your Eminence were to offer me now the position of Monsieur de Chavigny, commandant of the Château de Vincennes, I would not accept it.” But after Trinity, that is a different matter.
Nothing convinces us so much as the deep faith of another person. It influences even unbelievers; and Mazarin was not only not an unbeliever, but was even, as we have said, superstitious. And so he left very worried.
"A miser!" – Скряга! said the guard, who was leaning against the wall. "He pretends not to believe your sorcerer, Saint Laurent, just to avoid giving you anything; before he even gets to his own place, he'll have made money off your prediction."
Indeed, instead of going to the queen's chambers, Mazarin returned to the study and, calling Bernouin, gave orders that the next day at dawn he should send for the overseer he had assigned to de Beaufort and that he should awaken himself immediately as soon as he arrived.
The soldier, without knowing it, had opened the cardinal's most painful wound. During the five years that Beaufort spent in prison, not a day passed without Mazarin thinking that sooner or later, Beaufort would be released. You cannot keep the grandson of Henry IV in prison all his life, especially when this grandson of Henry IV is barely thirty years old. But no matter how he got out of prison, how much hatred he must have accumulated during his imprisonment for the one who was to blame for this; for the one who ordered his capture, rich, brave, crowned with glory, beloved by women and formidable for men; to the one who had taken away the best years of his life—after all, vegetating in prison cannot be called life! Meanwhile, Mazarin was increasingly tightening his surveillance over Beaufort. But he resembled the miser in the fable who could not sleep near his treasure. More than once he dreamed that Beaufort had been kidnapped from him, and he jumped up at night. Then he inquired about him and each time, to his chagrin, heard that the prisoner was happily drinking, singing, playing, and amidst games, wine, and songs, he kept swearing that Mazarin would pay dearly for all the pleasures that were being forcibly given to him in Vincennes.
This thought troubled the minister even in his sleep, so that when at seven o'clock Bernouin came in to wake him, his first words were:
- Ah? – А? What happened? Did Monsieur de Beaufort really escape from Vincennes?
“I don’t think so, Monseigneur,” replied Bernouin, whose composure never failed him. “In any case, you will now hear all the news, because the warden La Ramée, whom you sent for this morning at the Château de Vincennes, has arrived and is awaiting your orders.
“Open the door and bring him in,” said Mazarin, adjusting the pillows to receive La Ramée, sitting up in bed.
The officer entered. He was a tall, plump man, chubby-cheeked and imposing. He had such a serene appearance that Mazarin became alarmed.
“This guy looks like a fool to me,” he muttered. –
The warden stopped silently at the door.
“Come here, sir!” – ordered Mazarin.
The warden obeyed.
– Do you know what they are talking about here?
- No, Your Eminence. –
– That the Duke of Beaufort will flee from Vincennes, if he has not already done so.
The officer's face expressed the greatest astonishment. He opened his small eyes and large mouth wide, as if drinking in the joke with which the cardinal had honored him. Then, unable to restrain himself from laughing at such a proposition, he burst out laughing so loudly that his fat body shook as if from a violent chill.
Mazarin was pleased with this rather irreverent intemperance, but nevertheless retained his serious appearance.
Having laughed his fill and wiped his eyes, La Ramee decided it was time to finally speak up and apologize for his indecent gaiety.
“He will run away, Monseigneur!” “He will run away!” – he said. – “But doesn’t your Eminence know where the Duke de Beaufort is?”
- Of course, I know that he is in the Château de Vincennes. –
- Yes, Monsignor, and in his room the walls are seven feet thick, the windows have iron bars, and each crossbar is an arm thick.
“Remember,” said Mazarin, “that with a little patience you can break through any wall and saw through a grate with a clock spring.”
“You may not know, Monsignor, that the prisoner has eight guards: four in his room and four in the next room, and they never leave him for a minute.”
- But he comes out of his room and plays with balls and a ball. –
- Monsignor, all these entertainments are allowed to prisoners. However, if you wish, he can be deprived of them.
“No, no,” said Mazarin, afraid that his prisoner, deprived of these pleasures, would leave the castle (if he ever left it) even more embittered against him. “I only ask with whom he is playing.”
“He plays with the guard officer, Monsignor, with me or with other prisoners.
– Doesn’t he get close to the walls while playing? –
– Doesn’t your Grace know what these walls are like? Almost sixty feet high. It’s unlikely that the Duke of Beaufort was so tired of life that he would risk breaking his neck by jumping from such a wall.
“Hm!” – responded the cardinal, beginning to calm down. – So, you think, my dear Monsieur La Rame, that…
“As long as the Duke doesn’t manage to turn into a bird, I can vouch for him.”
“Don’t get carried away,” said Mazarin. “Monsieur de Beaufort told the guards who were taking him to the castle that he had often thought about being arrested, and therefore had forty ways of escaping from prison in reserve.”
“Monseigneur, if there had been at least one good way out of these forty,” La Rame replied, “he would have been free long ago.”
“Hm, you’re not as stupid as I thought,” Mazarin muttered to himself. «
“Besides, don’t forget, Monseigneur, that the commandant of the Château de Vincennes is Monsieur de Chavigny,” La Ramée continued, “and he is not one of the friends of the Duke de Beaufort.”
- Yes, but Monsieur de Chavigny sometimes goes away. –
– When he is absent, I am left. –
- Well, when do you leave? –
- Oh, for this case I have one fellow who is aiming to become the king’s overseer. This one, I guarantee you, guards conscientiously. He has been serving me for three weeks, and I can only reproach him for one thing - he is too harsh with the prisoner.
“Who is this Cerberus?”
- A certain Mr. Grimaud, Monseigneur. –
- What did he do before he came to serve you at the castle? –
“He lived in the provinces, caused mischief there through stupidity, and now, it seems, is glad to hide from responsibility by putting on a royal uniform.
- Who recommended this person to you?
- Manager of the Duke de Grammont. –
- So, in your opinion, can he be relied upon? –
- As for me, Monsignor. –
- And he is not a chatterbox? –
– Lord Jesus! I thought for a long time, Monsignor, that he was mute: he speaks and responds only with signs. It seems that his former master accustomed him to this.
“Then tell him, dear Monsieur La Ramée,” continued the cardinal, “that if he is a good and faithful guard, we will close our eyes to his pranks in the provinces, we will put on him a uniform that will make everyone treat him with respect, and we will put a few pistoles in the pockets of his uniform so that he can drink to the health of the king.”
Mazarin was generous with his promises – the complete opposite of the glorious Grimaud, whom La Ramée praised so much: he said little, but did much.
The cardinal bombarded La Ramée with a ton of questions about the prisoner, his quarters, how he slept, how he was fed. La Ramée gave such exhaustive answers to these questions that the cardinal let him go almost completely reassured.
Then, as it was already nine o'clock in the morning, he rose, perfumed himself, dressed himself, and went to the queen to inform her of the reasons that had detained him. The queen, who feared de Beaufort no less than the cardinal himself and was almost as superstitious, made him repeat word for word all the assurances of La Ramée and all the praise he had lavished on his assistant; then, when the cardinal had finished, she said in a low voice:
– What a pity we don’t have such a Grimaud for every prince. –
“Patience,” said Mazarin with his Italian smile, “perhaps someday we will achieve this, but for now…”
- And in the meantime? – .. .
– I will still take some precautions. –
And he wrote to d'Artagnan to return immediately.
What did the Duke de Beaufort do for fun at the Château de Vincennes?
The prisoner who inspired such fear in the cardinal and disturbed the peace of the entire court with his forty escapes had no idea of the fears that his person inspired in the Palais Royal.
He was guarded so thoroughly that he realized the impossibility of breaking free, and his only revenge was to revile and curse Mazarin in every possible way.
He even tried to compose poetry about him, but was soon forced to give it up. Indeed, not only did Mr. de Beaufort not possess a poetic gift, but he even expressed himself in prose with the greatest difficulty. It was not for nothing that Blot, a famous writer of satirical songs of that time, said of him: He thunders and sparkles in the battle, Inspiring fear in his enemies; But when we hear his speeches, Everyone has a smile on their lips. Gaston is not accustomed to battle, But words are easy for him. Why is Beaufort tongue-tied? Why is Gaston missing an arm?
After this, it is clear why Beaufort limited himself to only swearing and cursing.
The Duke of Beaufort was the grandson of Henry IV and Gabrielle d'Estrées, as kind, brave and hot-blooded, and, most importantly, as Gascon as his grandfather, but not nearly as educated. After the death of Louis XIII, he was for some time the queen's favorite and confidant and played a leading role at court; but one fine day he was forced to yield the first place to Mazarin and move to the second. And the next day, since he was so imprudent as to become angry, and so careless as to express his displeasure loudly, the queen ordered him to be arrested and sent to Vincennes, which was entrusted to Guiteau, the same Guiteau with whom the reader met at the beginning of our story and whom he will have the opportunity to meet again. It goes without saying that when we say "queen", we mean "Mazarin". Thus, not only did they get rid of Beaufort and his pretensions, but they completely stopped taking him into account, despite his former popularity, and now he was living for six years in the Château de Vincennes, in a room very unsuitable for a prince.
These long years, during which any other man might have come to his senses, had no effect on Beaufort. Indeed, anyone else would have realized that if he had not persisted in his intention to compete with the cardinal, to neglect the princes and to act alone, without assistants, with the exception – in the words of Cardinal de Retz – of a few melancholic people who resemble empty dreamers, he would have long ago managed to either gain freedom or acquire supporters. But nothing of the sort occurred to the Duke of Beaufort. His long imprisonment only further embittered him against Mazarin, who received news about him every day that was not very pleasant for him.
Having failed in poetry, Beaufort turned to painting and drew a portrait of the cardinal on the wall with charcoal. But since his artistic talent was very limited and did not allow him to achieve a great likeness, he, in order to avoid any doubts about the original, signed below: "Ritratto dell'illustrissimo Facchino Mazarini."
When M. de Chavigny was informed of this, he came to visit the Duke and asked him to choose some other occupation for himself, or at least to paint portraits without making signatures under them. The very next day, all the walls in the room were covered with both signatures and portraits. The Duke of Beaufort, like all prisoners, was like a child who is always drawn to what he is forbidden.
M. de Chavigny was informed of the increase in profiles. Not trusting his skill enough and not attempting to draw a face full face, Beaufort did not skimp on profiles and transformed his room into a veritable portrait gallery. This time the commandant remained silent; but one day, when the Duke was playing ball in the courtyard, he ordered all the drawings to be erased and the walls to be re-whitewashed.
